Classroom Activities

Elementary Activity

Standard:
CC.1.R.I.7 Integration of Knowledge and Ideas: Use the illustrations and details in a text to describe its key ideas.

Objective: Students will show knowledge of the website by drawing a picture of something they learned.

For an early elementary activity for Sudan, the students will read through the website with the teacher. Each student will then receive a blank piece of construction paper. They will illustrate one interesting thing they learned while reading through the website. If able to, the student themselves will write a sentence on the paper about what they drew. If they cannot yet write, the student will verbalize to the teacher what he/she drew. The teacher can then write what the drawing represents.

Upper Elementary Activity

Standard:
CC.6.W.2.b Text Types and Purposes: Develop the topic with relevant facts, definitions, concrete details, quotations, or other information and examples.

Objective: Students will research Africa and Sudan and present facts based off of their findings.

Students will read through the website on their own. After they have done that, they will have to come up with five different facts about Africa and five different facts about Sudan that they did not find on the website. They can find this information on websites, articles, or books in the library. After they have found their ten facts, they will have to present them in a project. This can be done in many ways. For example, the student can make a video with ten facts, write a paper, make a collage, or orally present their findings. Each student will get a chance to present their facts to the class. This allows for creativity-as long as they come up with ten different facts, the assignment will be considered complete.

Fine Arts Activity

Standard:
26.B.2dVisual Arts: Demonstrate knowledge and skills to create works of visual art using problem solving, observing, designing, sketching and constructing.

Objective: Students will use their knowledge of Sudan and Africa to create a collage.

Students will create a collage based off of facts they learned about Africa and Sudan. They can draw pictures, cut them out from magazines, and print pictures off. They will present their collage to the class and explain what the pictures represent.
